A stitch in time saves Nine”-The role of a First-Aid –Kit

Nancy a 16 year old little girl planned a college trip with her mates to a trekking destination, where she had to go through a miserable experience .While coming downhill, Nancy‘s toe nails got crushed inside her shoes and she had to walk all her way down in that state, because she did not carry any first-aid kit with her. It was only when she contacted the doctor after 6 hours that the doctor declared that the only solution was to have her nails tweezed out as she did not take any pre medical aid.

As is rightly said ‘a stitch in time saves nine’, a well stocked pack of first aid kit ,at one’s  home, driving vehicle or even one’s  workplace can prove to be very useful in times of emergency, before the nearest  medical facility can actually be contacted.

A well stocked first aid kit should include the following essentials as suggested by a majority of doctors:
1.   first-aid manual
2.   sterile gauze
3.   adhesive tape
4.   adhesive bandages in several sizes
5.   elastic bandage
6.   antiseptic wipes
7.   soap
8.   antibiotic cream (triple-antibiotic ointment)
9.   antiseptic solution (like hydrogen peroxide)
10.   Hydrocortisone cream (1%)
11.   acetaminophen and ibuprofen
12.   extra prescription medications (if the family is going on vacation)
13.   tweezers
14.   sharp scissors
15.   safety pins
16.   disposable instant cold packs
17.   calamine lotion
18.   alcohol wipes or ethyl alcohol
19.   thermometer
20.   plastic gloves (at least 2 pairs)
21.   flashlight and extra batteries
22.   mouthpiece for administering CPR (can be obtained from your local Red Cross)
23.   your list of emergency phone numbers
24.   blanket (stored nearby)

Dr Phillip a renowned medical practioner organized a camp at a city hospital where he educated people about the   Precautions that should be taken about a First- Aid- Kit. The measures included the following:
1.   Keep the first aid kit at a handy position, out of children’s reach and it is absolutely imperative to educate the children about the use and importance of first aid kit also.
2.   The stock of medicines should be continually refreshed and old and expired medicines should be replaced with new ones.
3.   Keep a separate first –aid –kit always ready for unforeseen emergency travels because, most often it is not easy to attain medical assistance in unknown places where you might have to travel unexpectedly.

Dr Phillip concluded the camp with the following statement, “The First aid Kit being most important element of emergency supplies is the pre-requisite of any safety measures that one intends to employ to ensure the safety of their near and dear one, and I recommend you to enlighten yourselves further on the following website:  www.survivalsupplies4u.com”
